In a thrilling NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway, 20-year-old Mayer from Franklin, Wisconsin, showcased his racing prowess. Starting fifth, Mayer was a prominent contender throughout the race, leading a total of 47 laps out of 253 scheduled laps. Despite facing challenges, including near-wrecks and tire issues that affected many competitors, Mayer persevered.
He made his first pass for the lead on Lap 169 and ultimately secured the final lead change with just seven laps remaining, overtaking Herbst. In an intense overtime finish, Mayer skillfully defended his position against Herbst for two additional laps, clinching his second victory of the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series season.
This victory marked a significant achievement for Mayer and highlighted his ability to navigate challenging race conditions and maintain composure during pivotal moments. The event also marked a memorable return for Iowa Speedway as a host venue for Xfinity Series events, adding to the drama and excitement of the day’s competition.
With the victory, Mayer, who ended up with a flat left-rear tire after Herbst gave Mayer a post-race bump into the side to express his displeasure from an earlier on-track contact and proceeded to blow his right-rear tire from his post-race burnout, notched his sixth career win in his 99th Xfinity Series career start, his second of the 2024 season and his first since winning at Texas Motor Speedway in April.
